Gemstones and Vedic Astrology
According to Vedic astrology, using certain types of gemstones and semi-precious stones can help strengthen the energy of a planet, and in that way, make better use of what that planet has to offer us according to each person’s particular natal chart.
In fact, the use of gemstones is one of the most recommended “remedies” in astrology (to learn about other “astrological remedies,” you can read this post).
In India, where astrology is part of daily life, it’s very common to see both men and women on the street wearing rings with one of the 9 gemstones recommended in astrology. It’s a tradition that is also alive in places like Thailand, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Nepal.
Gemstones Recommended for Each Planet in Vedic Astrology
These are the gemstones recommended for each planet:
- Moon: Pearl
- Mercury: Emerald or jade
- Venus: Diamond or quartz
- Mars: Coral
- Jupiter: Yellow sapphire, yellow topaz
- Saturn: Blue sapphire
- Rahu: Hessonite
- Ketu: Cat’s eye
Keep in mind that the higher the purity of the gemstone, the greater the energy it will transmit to the body.

Who Should Wear Each Gemstone?
Since in astrology each planet is associated with a particular gemstone, not all gemstones bring positive energy for everyone.
If, according to your Vedic natal chart, that planet is positive for you, wearing that gemstone can reinforce that positive energy. For example, you can use gemstones that help improve your health or concentrate your mind more. It’s a way of making a little change in your karma by strengthening a certain planet.
But if, on the contrary, in your chart a planet is associated with problems, wearing that gemstone can increase those problems. And without meaning to, you can increase obstacles in your life.
To give an example, I once heard of a person who was traveling and was carrying many rings with different gemstones to sell. To avoid paying taxes at the airport, he put several rings on each finger so he wouldn’t have to declare that he was bringing a lot of value in his luggage. During the two days he was traveling (he had several layovers), he had problems at the airport, missed flights, and the two computers he was carrying broke. It was like an astrological gemstone short-circuit.
How Should the Ring Be Worn?
To charge ourselves with the energy of the gemstone, it’s important that the gemstone is in direct contact with the skin. That is, there should be no metal between the gemstone and the skin.
In addition, it’s very important that it be worn on the appropriate finger in order to give results. For example, yellow sapphire should be worn only on the index finger.
You also need to take into account the type of metal of the ring. Each gemstone should be set in a ring made of a specific metal, since not all metals are good conductors for the energy of all gemstones. For example, pearls should be worn in silver, and quartz should never be set in gold.
Likewise, the night before wearing each gemstone, it’s recommended to soak the ring in a specific liquid, which depending on the gemstone can be, for example, milk or honey.
How to Know Which Gemstone to Use and How to Use It
To know the specific details that are right for you, it’s necessary to consult with a Vedic astrologer who will review your chart in depth to see, first of all, whether it’s beneficial for you to wear any ring, because maybe it’s not necessary, or maybe it’s even not advisable for you to wear any gemstone (and in that case you should be careful not to wear just any pair of earrings or necklace either).
It’s not, for example, that you want to reinforce love and you decide you need to wear a diamond to strengthen Venus; that’s not how it works at all.
To know which gemstone suits you, you have to analyze your Vedic natal chart as a whole, see which houses your planets rule, in which houses they are placed, with whom they are conjunct, among other things, and whether it’s beneficial to strengthen them or better not to touch them. In addition, you need to take into account which astrological period you are in.
If you’re curious to know which gemstone ring suits you (and on which finger, in which metal, and how to activate it), this is something you can ask about if you book a reading with me.
