The Difference Between Vedic and Western Astrology
One of the most common questions when someone starts exploring Vedic astrology is: what’s the difference between Vedic and Western astrology?
Although both systems share several element (like using the same planets and the same zodiac signs) their differences are quite significant. Let’s look at some of the key ones.
How the Birth Chart Is Calculated
Both Vedic and Western astrology use the positions of the planets in the sky at the moment of birth as a starting point, but the way they calculate those positions is different.
Thousands of years ago, both systems aligned. But there was a key fact that the Western system (also called tropical astrology) didn’t take into account.
The constellations move, year after year, in relation to Earth—very slightly, but they do move.
So, where Aries was located for both systems about two thousand years ago, the tropical system still considers that same spot to be Aries. But according to the Vedic system (also called sidereal astrology), Aries is no longer there, because the stars have shifted slightly backward from Earth’s perspective. Basically, where Aries used to be, now you’ll find Pisces.
In reality, the Vedic system calculates the horoscope based on the true, current positions of the constellations in the sky.
The Western system, on the other hand, uses a fixed or symbolic position of the constellations, based on where they were thousands of years ago—not where they actually are now.
Because of this, for example, when Western astrology says there’s a full moon in Sagittarius, Vedic astrology will say it’s in Scorpio (the sign before Sagittarius). And if you look up at the sky, the Moon will actually be in Scorpio, not Sagittarius.
You can check this with those apps that let you point at the sky and tell you which constellation you’re looking at. Point at the Moon and you’ll see the real constellation it’s in.
If someone has their Sun in Gemini in the Western system (the Sun sign is what people usually mean by “their sign” in that system), in Vedic astrology they’re actually in Taurus.
The Predominant Element in Vedic vs Western Astrology
Another important difference between Vedic and Western astrology is which element is considered predominant in the chart.
The Western (tropical) system takes the Sun sign as the main factor in a horoscope. When someone talks about “their sign,” they’re referring to the sign where the Sun is placed.
In the Vedic (sidereal) system, it’s the Ascendant—the constellation rising on the horizon at the moment of birth—that’s the key factor. When someone asks what sign you are in Vedic astrology, they mean your Ascendant. The Ascendant is equally, if not more, important than the Sun sign.
And although the Ascendant is very important, Vedic astrology doesn’t focus on describing people just by their Ascendant. What matters most is the entire chart as a whole.
The Planets Used in Each System
In Vedic astrology, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto don’t play a role. The reasoning is that there are so many planets in the universe that, even if they all influenced our inner energies, we can only meaningfully relate to the closest ones. Western astrology does include them when interpreting a chart.
What Vedic astrologers emphasize much more than Western astrologers are the two intersection points of the Moon’s and Earth’s orbits. Because eclipses occur at these two mathematical points, they’re considered highly significant.
These points are called Rahu and Ketu, and they’re symbolically represented as the head and tail of a dragon, which occasionally “eats” the Sun or the Moon.
How the Birth Chart Is Interpreted
Each of the two astrologies has its own set of rules, which is a major difference between Vedic and Western astrology. The meanings of the planets have many similarities, but in each system they take on specific qualities that differ from the other.
The same applies to the “houses,” or the areas into which a horoscope is divided. Even if the meanings of the houses share some similarities, they’re not the same.
In addition, the way planets relate to each other and to each house is also different.
Prediction vs Personality
This is a key difference between Vedic and Western astrology.
In Vedic astrology, much more weight is given to prediction than to personality interpretation. In fact, predictions can be remarkably precise. It’s possible to predict the timing and nature of major life events—such as important relationships and breakups, health issues, job changes, financial ups and downs, travel, moving, family dynamics, accidents, and more.
On the other hand, the Western system is very good at describing someone’s personality traits, but it’s generally considered less precise when it comes to predictions.
