Rahu and Ketu: The Lunar Nodes in Vedic Astrology
In Vedic astrology, Rahu and Ketu are considered two shadow planets, although they aren’t actually planets but mathematical points. Rahu is the north lunar node and Ketu is the south lunar node. They are the two points where Earth’s orbit around the Sun intersects with the Moon’s orbit around Earth.
When the Sun and Moon align with these points (Rahu and Ketu), eclipses occur.
What Characteristics Do Rahu and Ketu Have?
Here are the most notable characteristics of Rahu and Ketu:
Rahu Is the Head and Ketu Is the Tail
Rahu is considered the head and Ketu the lower part of the body of the same mythological demon (you can read the complete mythological story of Rahu and Ketu here).
Therefore, Rahu is very mental, astute, and quick to understand.
Additionally, having the mouth part, symbolically it is always hungry for more; it is very greedy. It has no stomach, as it is only a head. Therefore, it doesn’t digest—it just eats like a bottomless barrel. It always wants more.
Ketu, on the other hand, has no head, making it an erratic planet with unexpected results. You never know what to expect from it; the results of its dashas can be unpredictable.
Unlike Rahu, Ketu can be more withdrawn. Additionally, having no mind, if well-placed in the chart, it is also considered a spiritual planet and is linked to detachment.
Rahu and Ketu Are Not Planets
The lunar nodes are not planets but mathematical points. But we call them “planets,” which is actually a mistranslation of the Sanskrit term “graha,” which is what is used in India to refer to planets.
Graha means “that which grasps,” and it is used to refer to both real planets and Rahu and Ketu, because they “grasp” our mind and make it behave in a certain way, giving determined results according to our natal chart.
They Are Malefic and Hate the Sun and the Moon
By eclipsing the spirit and the mind, Rahu and Ketu are considered “malefic planets,” as they are the ones that cause eclipses.
In Vedic astrology, the Sun and the Moon are two essential planets, since the Sun represents the spirit and the Moon represents the mind; the union of both is what makes us human. The moments when symbolically the spirit or the mind are covered by a shadow are considered extremely malefic.
That is why, in an astrological chart, having Ketu with the Sun or Rahu with the Moon is considered a major problem and brings negative results.
They Are Always Retrograde
Rahu and Ketu are the only “planets” that move in the opposite direction to all the others, from an earthly perspective. Always, from our point of view, these mathematical points seem to move in one direction while all the other planets normally seem to move in the opposite direction.
This essential retrograde motion in Rahu and Ketu means that the effects they bring to our lives are intimately linked to mental patterns we carry from past lives.
These mental patterns can manifest through unresolved situations from past lives that continue manifesting in this life seeking resolution. In fact, this lack of resolution is essentially what keeps us tied to the cycle of birth, death, and reincarnation.
Because they continuously bring unresolved situations, the lunar nodes come to bring us lessons.
In Which Houses Can Rahu Be Good?
The houses in which Rahu doesn’t cause many problems are the 3rd, 6th, 10th, and 11th, since in these houses it is generally favorable to have malefic planets, as they give strength to the house. In all other houses, it can be problematic to some degree.
When Rahu or Ketu are activated in the chart, they will bring challenges or problems linked to the houses in which they are located.
They Are Always Opposite
In any astrological chart, Rahu and Ketu will always occupy opposite houses (the north lunar node, in the sky, will always be opposite the south). For example, if Rahu is in the 1st house, Ketu will be in the 7th house. If Rahu is in the 2nd, Ketu will be in the 8th.
